Blessed are the Dead Won!

Posted by on June 18, 2011

I am over the moon to announce my manuscript, “Blessed are the Dead,” took first place in The Sandy Writing Contest for the mystery division. The contest is part of the Crested Butte Writers Conference.

Here is a bit of what the final judge said, an editor who works at a respected publishing house, whom I shall keep anonymous:

” … I liked Gabriella and wanted to spend time with her. I also thought the author did a good job establishing character, plot, AND building suspense within a short period of time. This reminded me of Sue Grafton or Jan Burke.”

I am so thrilled. Instead of competing against only two other finalists to determine first, second and third winners, a tie in the early round meant there were five of us competing.

When I found that out, I didn’t think I would stand a chance against four other talented writers.
I’m still checking the website every hour to make sure they don’t change the results, saying there was a mistake!

I want to congratulate the other finalists, as well. I looked up some of them and their work and they are all very deserving!

I just want to thank the hardworking judges who read all the entries and say a special thank you to Theresa Rizzo, who worked so hard on all of this. I only wish I could be at the writing conference this weekend to buy a round of drinks!

For writers who have never entered this contest, it is one of the best around because even if you don’t final, you still get scoresheets and feedback from your judges — and that is golden.
